Trash to Treasure Tuesday

Could this basket be any uglier? Yes, I know...perfect for Trash to Treasure Tuesday. That's exactly what I thought when I spied it in my mom's garbage. I could see it's potential right away, and knew it would make a perfect backdrop for a spring arrangement on my front door. Now Kimm, this one's for you...do you recognize that paint color? Yep, you guessed it. It's your favorite - heirloom white. Now I am equally obsessed with it. Everything is mysteriously turning that color. Thanks Kimm! I stuffed some floral foam into the bottom and stuck in some springy "naturals" and...voila! I have a lovely new arrangement to greet my guests with. I still need some more filler for the back, but I'm collecting it a little at a time. Have you priced that stuff? It's highway robbery even when Hobby Lobby does their half off thing. I really like the way it turned out, but I think it will be even more fabulous when I get around to painting that door black. I have the paint, I just need to motivate myself to do it. Hubby keeps telling me I absolutely have to take the door off the hinges. I don't think that's necessary. Ya'll got any thoughts on that? Share your door painting skills. I'm listening...

    If you're careful you don't have to take the door off the hinges.
    Just use a smaller brush to paint around them. There are good ways to paint a door. Google for instructions if you've never done it before. I painted my front door red a while ago and I love it!

    Take the door off the hinges is what you'd tell anyone ELSE who is doing the painting. Not when you are! Jez, don't ask a man for directions!! Get a little brush or tape the hinges. For SURE tape the door knob and locks. Ask your paint guy if you need a tinted primer to go black too. It might be better than lots of coats.

    I painted our front door and didn't take it off the hinges. We got a small roller for the flat part and a brush for the recessed panels.

    The arrangement looks great!

    GREAT work.....looks terrific. and yes, those faux flowers and fillers are expensive! The dried stuff is sometimes more reasonable....

    I've painted my door twice since I bought my little cottage. I left it on the hinges. The first time I painted it a bright pink. I painted the cottage yellow. I liked it for a while but when fall came around I didn't like how my fall decorations looked with the pink so I painted it again. I painted it a bright green. I like that a lot better. I plan on changing the door all together one day. I'm on the look out for one with a window. I would love to find an old one. I have one in storage that was on my old house when I was a little girl. I'm gonna find it and see if it will fit. I love your basket and arrangement. Looks so expensive.

    Nice work on the arrangement!!

    I painted my door awhile ago and I didn't take it off the frame. Are you painting the whole door? Maybe then I'd take it off the frame.

    I am a new fan of Heirloom White myself! Just bought two more cans. Can't get enough of it!!!! Love your front door. My only advice for painting - don't do it when it's windy! HA! Have a great day Amanda!

    My mom never throws anything away without asking me if I want it first. LOL

    Don't take the door off the hinges. I have painted many front doors without doing that.

    I always regret it when I don't take doors off. I also take off any door knobs, etc. It just bugs me too much to have little imperfections. I would rather take an extra 20 min and do it right. It isn't much extra time, because the painting goes faster when you have it off.

    I've painted my front door and didn't take it off the hinges - it turned out fine. I would take off all of the hardware, though (knobs, knockers, kickplate). It's easier to paint and it looks better. Thanks for all of the great ideas!

    So pretty! We just had our door painted black - we have a friend who owns a painting business and he gave us a great deal! Anyway, he left the door on the hinges to paint. He masked off the hardware, but I would have taken it off if I was painting it myself. Just my 2 cents. :) Good luck!

    Looks great.

    I painted my front door last year and did not take it down. It worked out just fine. I taped around anything I thought needed it. I had a few mistakes on the hardware but found it scratched right off with my finger nail. I would however recommend talking off the door knob and deadbolt. I didn't do that and wish I would have.

    You don't have to take the door down, but it really wouldn't be hard to do, and you may be glad you did. Painters tape is my bff, but when you go to take it off and realized you missed something or it pulls up something...ugh!! I love the basket! Your comment about your cell phone made me laugh out loud!!! I got an iPhone today and it ROCKS!!!!!

    Hey friend! It looks great! I did a spring wreath too, and you are right about how expensive the stuff is. Now I see why they cost so much to buy already made. Anywho, I painted my front door, and did not take it off the hinges. It was super easy. Way too much work to take it off the hinges! It took a few coats, but it worked out fine. Good luck!

    Your mom was going to throw that basket away? No way!!

    As for your door, no need to take it off the hinges. When we had our house painted, they did the door too and left it on the hinges. They didn't take ANYTHING off the door--but I suggest taking off your knob and deadbolt...I think it would make the finish look better.

    Love the basket!

    I painted my door the color yours is now and I didn't take it off the hinges. I DID take the doorknob and deadbolt off, though. Just use a foam brush for the crevices and a small roller for the flat parts. Can't wait to see!

    Oh, and you probably won't need this but I put a tarp underneath because I'm messy. :)

    I have painted a couple of front doors in my day, and I've never removed the hinges, but then I'm an instant gratification kind of girl, and that can get messy.

    I just love your door arrangement! I have wanted a basket on my door for the longest time. I am still looking...

    As for painting - I have to agree with the others. I have painted many of my doors many times and I have NEVER taken one off the hinges. I wouldn't even want to try that. I just wait for a cool day and paint away. I just get impatient waiting for the paint to dry so I can hang my pretty wreath.

    One thing I do always do is use oil-based paint. It is much better on exterior surfaces.
