Red to Black Front Door Makeover

I had the brilliant idea to paint my front door at eight o'clock last night. I knew it was a gamble choosing to paint in the dark. But all the kids were fed, bathed, and in bed. The stars and moon aligned and I had nothing better to do. So....I dove right in and got it done. It was worth the risk of having to repaint just to be able to cross this project off my list....it has been on there for like 3 years!

This is my front door last year at Halloween. I cannot wait to see what my black and white spooky chic decorations paired with my new chic black door look like! I am so happy to see this red door go. Don't get me wrong...I love a red door, a bright red door. But mine was a purplish red......not loving that so much.

I love my Christmas fluff, but it sort of clashes with the old red door. I think all of my holiday decor will really pop on the black!

Has anyone noticed how unbelievably impossible it is to take a good picture of a black door or black furniture??? Anyway......I LOVE my new door. I love it even more with the addition of the vinyl lettering. I tried to zoom in so that you could get a better look at it, but the glare off the black was horrendous! So this is all you get.

Question? I'm thinking about painting the trim surrounding the door the same black. I eventually want to have the brick painted a nice grayish taupe. what do y'all think? Should I paint the puke green trim black or leave it until I can get the whole house and all the rest of the trim painted?

  1. Love the black!! Love the vinyl!! How in the world did you get the paint to dry and not stick to the rubber stripping around the door (ask me how I know!!) at eight o'clock at night!!??!! Looks great!!

  2. It looks beautiful! I'm painting my front door black as well. It's just a wild idea I got one day! My brick isn't as pretty as yours, it's a very drab red brick - but I think I will leave the white frame around the door and paint the door black. I love the lettering and numbers on your door - I'm going to consider something similar on my door!

  3. Your door is gorgeous! The black will look soooo good decorated. Not sure about the trim. I think I would wait until I had the house painted. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have really enjoyed my visit to your blog. Diane

  4. I love my black door!! I wanted a black especially for my Halloween decorations!! A black door makes everything look so much better haha!!
I would leave the trim that color it gives it a framed look, and I personally like it! Very nice, love your blog!!

  5. The black is gorgeous!

If you want to paint the trim now, go for it!

  6. I'm wondering how you kept it from sticking too - or letting in skeeters while you painted.

I would paint the trim - although I guess i should say I love the green, since it appears to be the same color green as on my house. And I also want to paint my house a grayish taupe.

  7. i love this! i really want to paint our front door black as well... i'm waiting until we paint the rest of the house though because i'm afraid it will be the only thing black? i don't know... i'm obsessed with black and white, so i'm gonna say what about white trim? not sure what the rest of your house looks like, but either way i'd paint it. black would look good to. beautiful job... love your door... and your blog:)

  8. How funny I am planning on painting my door red! It is dark blue right now and I have gray bricks, planning on changing the trip to a taupe color. I don't think you should paint your trim black, I think it will make your door look bigger and I think we kinda have a visual of what size a door is in our head and yours will look a little off. I guess I vote wait until you paint the taupe color! Looks great and I love the welcome as well!!!

  9. This looks great and I had to smile about not being able to get started until after 8...you just do what you can when you can, right? love the black, looks classy! (:

  10. Love it black, Amanda! We have to redo our vinyl siding and were talking about getting a new door. Ours is currently white but I told hubby I want to do black, so either way, by fall I'll either have a new black door or a new old black door.

  11. I love the door black! I want to paint my door too. It is white right now and so boring. I'm not sure what color to paint it but I have often thought black. I am pretty scared. I like what you said just paint it again if you don't like it.

  12. Love the door! It will be perfect for all seasons. I'd paint the trim black too, if you're still looking for advice. :) Love the vinyl too!

  13. Love the new Black Door! And I'm with the rest of the bloggers....how did you get it dry so you could close it and get to bed? I don't think the green is ugly. I would wait until the big brink paint spree. :)

  14. I love it, Manders. :) My computer screen makes the green trim look taupe, and it actually looks kind of nice. I wonder if taupe or white might look nice once you have the house painted. Someone else mentioned it "framing" the black door. I think it looks wonderful! :)

  15. Oh, I love it! I just decided today to paint our front door--I'll probably wait until this weekend, though :)

I would leave the trim for now--I like how it frames your door.

  16. I love the black! I just painted mine a really dark brown, I was too nervous to go black, but now I am jealous! I like the different color trim, I think it's a nice accent!

  17. The door looks fabulous...so, so, so good. Love the vinyl Welcome and letters on it too. Isn't it amazing what a color change can do.

I am so glad that I am not the only one that gets these ideas and must do them now, dark or not.

  18. Good work on the door!! I am rather fond of puke green, so I vote for that...but what do I know!

  19. Love the black door! Not sure about the trim. I am soooo not good at picking out colors or things like that....sorry I am zero help to you! LOL

  20. It looks great! I was JUST talking to my husband about painting our doors. I really want to but I don't know what color to go with...our house is a light yellow... ? I kind of like the different color trim around the door! :)

  21. We did the same thing, red to black from door. And it was amazing how much better it looks.

You did a great job !

  22. What did you use to paint the door? I used spray paint last year and it is fading so I'm looking for something better that will last longer than a year. The door looks great! I love the black.

  23. I say paint the trim black! And I LOVE the black door - it's much better than your purplish, red one. :) And I love the flowers and flower pots beside it!

  24. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your door! I wish that I could pant mine a different color. I think you should paint the trim a creamy color to match the vinyl it would make the door *POP* just beautifully.

  25. I wouldn't paint your trim black, it might make your door seem "lost". I think contrasting with another color would be a better choice. I only say this because I had the exact same issue. I'm glad I kept my door frame white, because it really frames the door and makes it stand out.

  26. Beautiful! I must know what paint you used and how you did this. Details please! I have a white door with a dark red brick house. I know my door NEEDS to be black!

  27. love your new door - any time you want to paint, come over to my house. I could use you!

  28. Nice Work! Love the vinyl letters!

  29. Love it...regarding the trim, I vote for a contrasting color. Now dish! How did you do it? Straight clean, prime, paint?

  30. I love your black door, Amanda! How cute are you, out there painting your door in the moonlight? If it'd been me, I would have had bugs stuck in the paint.

I'd leave the trim, I think. The door really pops with that trim around it. You can always change things when you have the house painted, but for now I think it looks wonderful!

  31. I looks really great! I have wild ideas in the middle of the nights too!

  32. I think I'd paint the trim white, myself. simply b/c I worry you might loose the impact of the gorgeous black if the trim is black, too.

  33. The door looks great! Not crazy about the green--I would paint the trim a white. It should look better, especially if you are going to paint the brick soon.

  34. totally worth it makeover. looks much more modern. great job!

  35. Your black door is wonderful! I painted all my outside doors black last summer (after painting the whole house yellow) to match the shutters, BUT I left the front door Red I also painted my door coming in from the garage black (not on the inside to the house) and I find those dirty fingerprints from the garage have disappeared --YEA>>>>

  36. I personally would not ever paint the trim black you would lose your impact of the black door. Contrast is a good thing. Love the black door. (my sister has had a black door at all her homes she's owned-she loves them too.)

  37. ok-this is funny. We just switched colors. I had a black door and now it's red. My house faces East-and the sun would pound on it all day and it would be hot to the touch. So not a great idea with little people in the summer.
In my opinion-paint the trim. I can't see the rest of your house though. Just a warning-once your start painting some-you can't stop your self!! I painted everything red!- My door, trim, shutters, lights. Yep-all red.
hey-go on to my blog and watch the video I just posted. Laugh out loud funny. seriously-it will make your night!!!

  38. LOVE your black door. A few years ago we went stayed in a historical area of downtown Boston and I FELL IN LOVE with all the black doors and when we got home I painted our door black and didn't regret it at all! I wish I had that much energy in the evening!

    Best wishes,

  39. Love the black door! Very dramatic and eye-catching. I live in an HOA neighborhood so we're not allowed to have this kind of fun. I would paint the trim black. www.satisfiedsole.com

  41. Love it! Very chic! I would paint the trim.

I've been wanting to paint my front door too! Is your door metal or wood and what kind of paint did you use? I wasn't sure what would be best.

  42. Love the black door!! I would paint the trim another color to focus the attention on the door. I love brick homes so I wouldn't paint the brick. The brick is so charming and if you see two old homes together, one painted and one original brick, the original brick always looks the best.

  43. Just curious ~ did you paint both sides? I am all geared up for this but was thinking of doing the inside as well. Would love to know your opinion :)

  44. How often do you change the color of your front door? Haha! It seems like you give it a facelift every year. I'm a big fan of the color black and it works on your front door. It even matches your outdoor vases! And please, do change that puke green side casings of your front door. It kills the mood of your front porch. Haha!

  45. Okay wow, that was a HUGE difference! Your door definitely looks better in black! I hope you don’t mind, though, if I agree with everyone who suggested that you not paint the frame black too. You’d definitely lose the door if you did. If I’d seen this post in time though, I would have suggested a dark wood stain, like mahogany or walnut. It would be a dark brown, so it would complement both your door and the brick siding. What did you end up doing with the door frame though?

  46. I, too, agree with all the suggestions about the door frame! If you really want to stay with the color theme, go with a lighter gray, although I think Terry’s suggestion works best. I just painted my front door black as well, and I matched it with a cherry wood stain on the frame and door jamb. The black of the door makes the lightness of the cherry really stands out.
