Remember when I posted about my fabulous new-to-me repurposed 8 foot work table? Well, I promptly went to town putting a skirt on it so that I could hide all of my "stuff" underneath. And guess what? I HATE it! Here are all the things I hate. Number 1....the fabric. I used painter's dropcloth because it was inexpensive and I thought the neutral color would be good. Ummmmm...not so much. I can't stand the wheat color in this room. In my chocolate brown living room it looks fab, but in here it's a snooze-fest. Number 2....my decision to NOT cover the legs. I was thinking it would make the whole process of getting stuff out from underneath easier. Guess what? It really doesn't make one ounce of difference in how I get stuff out. What was I thinking? Number 3......the addition of the ribbon to cover the hideous veneer trim. Not a complete bad idea. It does need to be covered, just not with ribbon. I think this might be the first time ever that ribbon has failed me. I'm so disappointed.
I guess it's not horrible, but it is just not working for me.
Oh, how I wish I could leave it open like this. But unfortunately I have way too much inventory and crafty crap that I need to hide. Dang those hobbies of mine! I am hoping to get started on the new table skirt tomorrow. I found some lovely fabric at Hobby Lobby that I think will be the perfect compliment to my black and white room redo. Stay tuned for reveal #2........
The ugly veneer is completely off on both side pieces, and I actually think it looks better like this than with the ribbon. Since then I have completely ripped off all of the ribbon and the rest of the trim. Now I have to pull 987 staples out of the table, so I can start all over.

Maybe you could velcro a ruffled skirt to the table and then it would be easy to just remove when you are crafting or need to get into things.. .Just a thought

ReplyDeleteWhat if you had your dad make (or buy if you can find them) some shelves to fit under the table. I'm thinking more the cube shelves, and then organizing items into canvas bins that you can slide into the the shelves. Then you wouldn't have to do a skirt at all to fight with every time you had to get stuff out. Just a thought!

Hi loving all the black and white and have you tried painting it instead of the ribbon? Underneath l'd use nice storage boxes all the same and labelled so you know what's in them instead of a curtain if you don't like it that much...just a suggestion

I liked it..but what about sewing the ribbon on the drop cloth some how to break up the "wheat field"??? The black and white dots look great with the wheat. hehe.. or you could stamp dots on it like I did on my curtains for my craft room. (see my blog) Have fun girlie!!

ReplyDeleteI don't think it looks bad, but maybe you could find some cheap black fabric and use black to tie in with the rug! Its so hard when we are crafty gals!
ReplyDeleteWhat about using wicker baskets or wicker bins with lids on them? you might even be able to find those shelves with the wicker baskets in them, cut off the legs and slide it under the table. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWhat about just putting a table cloth over the whole darn thing, then a cut to fit piece of glass on the top that can serve as a work surface? The table cloth can all the way to the floor so you won't have to prettify your storage. You can place art or photos or anything under the glass and add those 'bumpers" to the underside corners of the glass to keep it from sliding.

ReplyDeleteI think you're too hard on yourself! I think that maybe doing a pleat in the front so it opens from the front would make the underneath more accessible. I used heavy decorator's velcro from the craft store so I can remove the skirt if I need to. :)
ReplyDeleteYou poor baby! It's terrible to work so hard on something and have it turn out to be NOT what you wanted. Now, the rest of us probably think it's great, but it's what YOU think that matters. . .so I'm proud of you for going back to the drawing board! And I know you'll find another great use for the dropcloth fabric, won't you?

ReplyDeleteI really like the table in it's original state, but I know that you want to hide your stuff. What about shelving with oblong or square baskets underneath. You would still see the great design of the tale. Just an idea.

ReplyDeleteYou know you can buy iron on laminate trim just like you would on the edge of cabinets??? Also, I think the storage would look wonderful uncovered if stored in a neat way, such as, head over to knockoffwood and get some plans to make cubbies. (Not to add to your project list!) But with cute vinyl lettering and buckets and bins, it would look wonderful. I just hate the skirt idea because it reminds me of my 80 year old grandma's kitchen sink, how they put fabric....yikes, its a step back a few centuries to me! Good luck!

I agree with a lot of the previous comments, try shelves/bins/baskets underneath. It may cost a bit more initially, but I think you may find that it ultimately looks neater that way & then when you pull the bins out to use, you have the added benefit of them looking pretty on top of the table, too. It is a really gorgeous table! I had a folding table in my craft room that we skirted when we were selling our house, just to hide the junk, I mean stuff underneath. But I found it to be a pain to have to constantly flip up the skirt all the way to dig under there & then it covered up everything I had on the table...so if you have papers or little items out on the table they get all shifted around. If you really want to do a skirt, perhaps try it more like a curtain on a rod that can be opened & closed??? Just some thoughts! I can't wait to see the second reveal!
ReplyDeleteI like it as a starting point, but agree that it is a long stretch of tan. What about if you leave it as is and break up the tan with a large black oval in the middle and your monogram in the middle or a favorite quote? That would help bring the black in and your eye would go straight there.
