Ok, I'm just gonna put it out there and say to the world that I am NOT good with furniture rehabs. I love the before and afters. I'm all about picking paint colors and fabrics. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty details...I'm at a loss. So I'm asking all of you experts out there to give me some of your best tips and tricks. I need your help!
Remember this roadside treasure I found a couple weeks ago? Well, I am ready to do something with it...and I don't know where to start. I want to eventually paint it white and upholster the middle part with a fabric to coordinate with the other fabrics in the room. Oh, and I want tufted buttons, of course! The off white painted part has a slightly glossy finish and seems really thick. The nasty gold detail is already chipping off. So, can I use my handheld sander on it... or should I use a deglosser/liquid sander...or should I strip the paint? Share your wisdom. Tell me what to do and I will do it. But remember, I am a lazy perfectionist and will probably end up tweaking the process just a bit. Sorry... just being honest.
The room is shared by my two girls and has to coordinate with the crib bedding. The walls are the softest shade of pale pink and the furniture is white. Very girly, but not frilly.
This bulletin board and the lamps are the only accessories right now.

ReplyDeletei LOVE THE pattern and and colors in your D. room. I think it would be cute to add either a solid all over fushia pink like that pink in that polka dot lamp. Put that fabric all over the head board. Then for the buttons get them in the other colors for a nice contrast.Or as another pattern, stick to the colors but find something in gerber daisies... jUST MY opinion! I am sure what you do will look super!, can't wait!
I would probably rip off the old fabric, and save it as a pattern for your new fabric. Where the paint is chipped and highly uneven, I would sand and then, depending on how much is left, use a deglosser or just straight up strip the paint off. Centsational Girl does have a great tutorial on her headboard that gives information about tufting and such - it'll get you started. There is a GREAT place (www.homefabricsonline.com) to get decorator weight fabrics in lots of variety and cheap too! They don't have a place near you, but I'm pretty sure they sell online too. ReplyDeleteI got nuthin'! This is a project I have not yet attempted. The others are right that Centsational Girl recently posted about her headboard, but it was something that she wrapped entirely in fabric and it looks like yours just has fabric in the center.

Well, I am not the girl to ask about the wood part (I tend to spray paint first and ask questions later!) but I like fabric.com for online fabric choices. This collection of theirs had a few cute options for around $7/yard:

Well, I can only tell you what I would do. I would take a sander to it to get the surface roughed up a bit. Try to get it smoothed out, prime it, and paint. As for the fabric...rip it off, but keep it as a template for the new fabric you'll put over it. I have ordered fabric off Etsy before, but you usually need to know what you're looking for (ie. designer name, etc.). Otherwise, I know that fabric.com has a great selection! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI would sand down the gold paint, rip off the old fabric to use as a template (and they probably just stapled it on and then put a trim around the edge to cover it up) and then primer your headboard. Me? I'd go a nice lime green like from your fabric and do a pink trim around the padded part of the headboard and then look at fabric.com for a fun fabric that goes with your theme.

If you are going to paint it I would just sand it with like 120 grit sandpaper and then primer it and then paint it. You could use spray paint and primer. Easy peasy. Then the fabric I would probably just use little nails and glue to hold in place and then cover it with nailhead trim. Then to do the tufting I would just drill holes through it and cover buttons and tie them through and staple it on the back.
ReplyDeleteI am super lazy at rehab, but I say for a kid's bedroom to just slap some primer on over the nasty and then paint it pink! That's all I ever do, and nothing has peeled off yet! A small can of primer and paint should do you, and then you can put your reupholster on later. . .

ReplyDeleteI'm not a guru, but I'll tell you what I'd do.
First, I would check to see if the upholstered piece of the headboard comes out, away from the frame. If it does, I'd just take it out and stretch the new fabric right around the existing piece--no need for a pattern, just stretch around and staple-gun to the back. While it's out, I'd spray-paint the frame with KILZ, then paint. In my experience, there's almost nothing you can't paint if you KILZ the surface first!
As for fabrics, you know my source is the $7.99/yard Not Just Linens store close to my house. Let me know if you'd like for me take a look there for something that would work for you. I'd probably bring in some green with at least one of the fabrics, since your walls are pink. Of course, I'd always bring in some green, wouldn't I? A fun little pink and green check or plaid might be nice, or a stripe. . . . What fun you're going to have!

Hi--love your blog. I'm not much of a blogger but I have redone some furniture. My most recent and challenging was an old (very old) door I changed into a desk top. It was coated with nasty oil base paint and I am too lazy/ADD to strip it. So upon recommendation from my local paint store I found this amazing primer. It is called Grip IT. And it will cover anything. They put it on glass, let it cure for 7 days and painted over it. . .they could NOT scrap the paint off. So I used it on my door. Let it cure for 3 days, painted over it and was able to sand off some areas where I wanted it distressed/stained. Easy-peasy. Love that stuff.

ReplyDeletewhat i have, instead, is a huge THANK YOU. yesterday, i received the most adorable fleur de lis wall hanging. i absolutely love it! it goes so well in my guest room/nursery. alas, it would go so well in my daughter's black & white french bathroom, as well. what's a mother to do? hang it up quick before she steals it! hah!

I did my daughters room in pink and orange Used an orange tone on tone stripe, a solid hot pink, an orange, a pink, lime green and white plaid, and a little tiny pink and orange polka dot. She loves it.

Oh you can do this Amanda! How about a darker pink toile? (like the one I just used on my thrift store chair)--and are you convinced you have to paint it? It looks pretty good to me, very vintage-y! And I haven't done it myself but I bet you could find a you-tube or expert village tutorial on tufting. They have the supplies for it at Micheals and Hobby Lobby! Good luck.

ReplyDeleteCaromal Colors. No prep work necessary. Then look at Interior Fabrics for great and well-priced fabric or just use burlap and those do it yourself buttons with a cuter fabric that maybe costs too much per yard.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter's bedding is that same fabric. I ordered it from Horchow. There are two coordinating fabrics that go with it. You can look on the Horchow website and Neiman Marcus website to see the coordinating fabrics. I have seen these fabrics on ebay. I also ordered extra fabric online. After doing some research the name of the fabric is "Spring Twister" by Braemore and the coordianting fabrics are "Green Cartwheel" and "Fuschia Cartwheel". Hope that helps.
Cute! I found some michael miller fabrics that look similar to this that I am using in my nursery. How hard was it to make the bed skirt.
